Bienvenido. Welcome… to the Stoney Rocks Museum of Impermanent Stonework. Creation, destruction and re-creation; that’s what it’s all about. It’s a virtual museum that only exists in the imagination and here online because there is no centralized real world location for the exhibits. Instead, the sculptures of impermanent stonework are created at various places throughout Otsego and Delaware County and collected here as video presentations.
The original idea hatched from a rock supply problem and my wish to work at home during the pandemic… What if I use the same pile of rocks over and over to create/destroy and re-create a whole series of sculptures in my own backyard? So I got myself a five ton pile of stone and started playing around with it. The first sculpture to emerge from the pile was a humanoid figure and he somehow became the character of Stoney Rocks.
Of course he couldn’t last forever. And it was almost as fun destroying him as it was building him. Afterwards, I built a whole new sculpture from the ruins. I also made a short video of the destruction and creation process.
After a few months time, I destroyed this new sculpture and again created something new from the ruins. The process of doing so is absolutely exhilarating. It’s like yoga, weight lifting, Art and physics all rolled together into a ball of experience. I really wish everyone out there in the world could try it. Or at the very least, watch the videos. After this new sculpture lives for a few months, I will destroy it too and build something new. And after the new one lives for a while, I will destroy it too and build something new… And so on. Destruction and creation tied together in a unified process is what the ever-evolving Stoney Rocks Museum of Impermanent Stonework is all about.
The Stoney Rocks exhibit is on private property that is not open to public visitors. It is only one of many exhibits of “impermanent stonework” that have been created at many different locations. The idea of the “Stoney Rocks Museum” is to capture a variety of impermanent stonework creations in an ongoing short video series and share those videos along with a short newsletter about the concept of “impermanent stonework” to interested “patrons.”
The First Video is posted above. The next video is posted below under premium content. Other videos are linked to by visiting the Exhibits listed above.. To see more videos and future videos of my ever growing collection of impermanent stonework creations sign up to become a Patron of the Stoney Rocks Virtual Museum and thereby gain access to all premium content. All patrons will receive video coverage of Stoney’s continuing evolution. I’m not sure how frequently he will be destroyed and re-created. It will probably depend upon how much I am attached to each particular sculpture. Patrons will also receive additional short videos and images of many other impermanent stonework exhibits as well. The minimum payment to become a patron is $33.33 per year but you are encouraged to pay more or less depending upon your personal interpretation of the value of the Art presented. As an added bonus, all patrons will be licensed and encouraged to re-use the video footage and images in their own art work. Theoretically, the videos and images of Stoney Rocks’ could evolve in the hands of the patrons on the internet just as the Stoney Rocks’ sculpture evolves here in my hands.
So sign up today. Join the collaboration. Support the Arts. Participate in the process. Become a patron of the Stoney Rocks Museum and enter the World of Impermanent Stonework.
