The Stone Wall Workshop

I love building stone walls. It really is one of my favorite things to do. Putting rocks together with gravity is not just a skill, technique or art form. It is also a yoga meditation zen exercise with weights kind of thing. And the end result of the process is a very beautiful structure. Generally speaking, I like to work alone because having others around during the process distracts somewhat from the experience and interrupts the meditation. But I very much want other people to build stone walls too. I think everyone in the world should be able to experience the joy of building with rocks and gravity because it is an essential human activity. That’s why I teach a two day stone wall building workshop called, “Gravity is Your Mortar”. During the two day class, I teach all the fundamentals of gravitational stone construction. Hopefully, after the workshop, all the participants will understand the how and the why and the what of putting dry stone walls together. Then, they just have to put in the effort and practice. They can go home and engage in the meditative exercise on their own and make their very own beautiful stone structures.

I also enjoy building stone walls as a community activity.  That too is what the stone wall workshop is all about.  The two day workshop is designed for ten or so students/participants.  We work together as a class to complete a stone wall of pre-determined size and shape.  Usually it’s an 18 inch tall sitting wall about 40 feet long that serves as a seat for group meetings.  But really, the workshop can build any size or shape of wall that the group organizing the class wants as long as there are enough students participating in the workshop to complete the size and shape desired.    So if you are involved in a community or an organization or a church group or a business and you are looking for a fun and challenging  group activity to make something beautiful and useful on your organization’s property.  Contact me and we will set up a stone wall workshop.
